It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them. -Agatha Christie, author (15 Sep 1890-1976)

First thought that came to my mind when I read that quote:
Why might a person realize how much you love the other person? Because they are sharing themselves and being vulnerable.

More thoughts: When a person acts ridiculous (in a silly way), to me it feels like you get a sense of their true playful nature. If they are willing to share that with you...to be playful with you, then they are sort of trusting you in a sense. In addition, it's almost an invitation to be playful or silly or ridiculous back. And guess what? That is FUN!!

It creates a bond of trust when you feel comfortable sharing that part of yourself. And THAT feels good to be able to do...to be able to be yourself, express yourself, and to still be accepted.

When that first person is silly with you, it's like they are saying, "Hey there! I trust you enough to be able to show you my silly side! Join me!! I want to have fun with you!"

The sad side: Some people roll their eyes or make a put down and that may make the silly person feel less apt to share that side of themselves with others. It can be discouraging and the silly person may feel ashamed. (Of course that is only a problem for the expressive person IF they let the bastards get them down. They could instead feel sorry for the person who is too <strike>uptight</strike> uncomfortable to have fun or to take risks!)

Invitation to share your playful side:
Well....writing all of this now makes me think of a silly thing Kanoa and I did yesterday. We put on a wig and took silly pictures. I'll share that here...and if anyone reading this ever wants to post a silly picture of themselves, please do! That would be fun to share!

I went to my first Boston Tea Party Swing
Dance Conference - so fun!!

There was a Jack and Jill contest where you get randomly paired with another dancer and dance three dances. I started learning West Coast Swing since January, but decided to give it a go. I placed "alternate" which means that if one of the people who got called back didn't show up, I would take their place. The young people whom I take WCS classes with on Thursday evenings placed in the finals!! Awesome!!

Dance 1 was my best. I had danced a bit with Craig in a workshop and he moved at just the right pace for me....he focused on basic moves that I could keep up with. I think it looked good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiwBFK6aMnU

Dance 2 I stunk at. My partner had awesome moves and gave cues fine. However, I need to learn how to better understand how to respond to the cues and learn more movements and styling and have all that feel natural. I wish I had been able to keep up. Knowing this will motivate me to keep working on it. The more partner dancing I can do, the more steps I learn and practice, the better I'll get because it will feel natural and I'll understand how to respond to the cues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFokojMbvOY

Dance 3 - I Love One More Night by Maroon 5, but didn't move well enough to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BmSRa8l6MI

I'm so grateful for my friend's wife who taped the dances!

And I'm so lucky to have a sweet and generous husband who makes it possible for me to do the things I love the most! And for my kiddos who support me as they know how much I love to dance! :D
And for my friend Eileen whom I got to visit and share the experience with!

---
Got there on Friday afternoon, bought Comfort suede dancing shoes, took 4 hour long workshops, had a brief rest, my roomate (another unschooling mom) arrived and we chatted for a couple hours. Then danced from midnight till 6am. No kidding!

Saturday - Up at 11:40am ish, took part in the Newcomer Jack and Jill contest. Attended a couple of workshops. Rested. Watched various crossover dances (Lindy and WCS). Danced again midnight till 6am. I especially loved it when I felt a dance went well...like when I could keep up with the moves or was able to dance with someone more advanced who could lead me through new steps and movements - that was awesome!! Though I am a newbie, I did ask people of all levels to dance if I wasn't asked. My goal was practice and fun!

Sunday - Up at 10am (woke up feeling sleepy, but not tired enough to go back to sleep). Got things packed in the car to go home. Took 3 awesome workshops - loved all of them! Watched finals, did some social dancing and headed home at 6:30pm.

Now I want to go to the Gold Room even more! There is a lesson and then social dancing every Monday night in Portland. Hmmmm....will need to adjust my schedule and see if there is a way to do that...at least in the warmer weather and after Jim's busy season.

We sat around the tv last night to watch Sawyer Fredericks, whose family are our camp neighbors when we go to the WeShine Unschooling Conference. Sawyer is 15 and has a soulful, powerful voice that beckons you to listen (with your mouth dropped open!).

He was on The Voice last night!!! I told Katie about it and she sat with her host family on the Big Island of Hawaii to watch! They too thought his performance was awesome!

All week we were trying to guess who he picked to be his coach. So glad he picked Pharrell, because Happy was one of the songs sang at last year's unschooling conference! And Pharrell was the one who said, "This is your destiny...and it's really about what you want to do.." which is so unschooly and such a perfect fit!! Sawyer said on the show that one of the reasons he chose Pharrell was because he "...talks about originality and allowing you to go your own way. I think that really goes with my style". Cool! Sheesh....not only cool, PERFECT!!!

If you'd like to check out Sawyer's Website, visit http://www.sawyerfredericks.com/ or check out his page on facebook https://www.facebook.com/SawyerFredericks.

Adding this on 3/23/15 - Christina Aguilera praises Sawyer saying, "There's no teaching what you do!" http://www.activistpost.com/2015/03/christina-aguilera-praises-unschooler.html

Here is a little daily inspirational email that I look forward to each day. It's from TUT - A Note From the Universe.

Each day, I can read something helpful into it depending on how I interpret it and relate it to my thoughts and what is going on in my life currently. I think this example is a perfect one to encourage writers to begin, even if they still feel in the darkness. Makana is going to visit the Camden Hills Elementary School tomorrow (4th grade) to see if she might like it. She was supposed to check it out last Tuesday, but school was canceled due to a snowstorm.

Though I support her and help her find out about what she is curious and interested in - and will do so for her current interest in school, I hope she likes homeschooling better.

As a homeschooler, Makana can do all the art she wants to and currently spends a lot of time drawing and painting and creating. When we arranged for the school visit, we asked if it was possible for her to attend on a day when they have art. On Tuesday's, the kids have a whole hour of art and therefore her visit is arranged for a Tuesday. I do hope they have school tomorrow and it's not another snow day as she is excited to try it.

This will be a whole new experience for her in many ways. I said that if she does like it (and before she'd enroll..if she even wanted to), to check out the homeschool coop in Belfast....because she might like that better. Or maybe she will be satisfied with all the things she already does now.

Makana is saying yes to so many new things lately. We've been to open gym*, swimming, signed up for a homeschool art museum trip, found an art teacher to do a homeschool art class which begins next week*, bought new art supplies on sale, checked out the local kids chorus (was not for her), arranged for her to visit the school for a day, and she said she would like to try skiing. Plus there are free art lessons in Rockland on Tuesday afternoons. She may try those too. Oh! And she joined the book club at the library as well and loved it. She wishes it met more than once a month as she loved it so much! When it isn't snowing, we've gone to writing club. On our own we enjoy making up stories and jotting down book ideas. Some of her latest ideas are a Doctor Who alphabet book or one similar to Shel Silverstein's "Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book: A Primer for Adults Only," and a book about a cat and dog, and another she wrote with Kanoa. And dancing together (see video below). Busy busy.... Plus time to get into Pretty Little Liars! We both love it and are in season 2. (* = those activities I organized)

Because she is so into art, we've been reading many different books on artists, especially before bed. While organizing her room and bookshelves, we found some old art books that she loved - esp one on Picasso.

Makana is also interested in history and when we were going through the books, we found a book on Betsy Ross - one short one I read aloud and another in a series that Katie used to love. She is currently reading the one from the series and chose to take that book with her as her reading book for tomorrow.

In the organizing process, she discovered the Who Am I? books where you try to guess who the famous person or character is based on the hints provided. One of the people in the guess book was Betsy Ross! Love it when those connections happen. :)

Makana isn't told to read any specific books - she has a large variety of them on our bookshelves and through our library from which to choose. She wasn't asked to read a prescribed number of questions in the Who Am I? book. She likes doing the quizzes because they are fun to try to figure out. When she is interested in something, it is because of her own curiosity and her own desire to find out more. That desire is natural in people, but can get stamped out (or partially stamped out) when the agenda of another person or an institution insists that there is a better way to learn or even a specific way to learn.

I just helped her organize for tomorrow. We need to be there at 8:15am (she usually sleeps till between 10:30 and 11:45am, so this will be an early rising day). I have paperwork to fill out. She's supposed to take a snack, boots and snowpants (because she must go outside for recess for at least five minutes I think...but she doesn't have snowpants that fit well right now, though she said she would be fine without them), sneakers, and a book to read (maybe there is some free time or downtime?). I added paper, pen and a pencil to the list. The 4th grade in that school switches teachers and classrooms, though in 5th grade they go back to not switching.

About two weeks ago, Kanoa had a second tooth that was loose. It was his other big bottom front one. It moved very forward as the adult tooth pushed up behind it. I told him I suspected it would come out in a day or two.

A couple nights later I asked if I could check his teeth. I wanted to see how loose it had become. It had hurt for the past few nights when I brushed his teeth, so he hadn't been keen on letting me peek. But he did that night and I noticed it was GONE! Where did it go? I asked him if he knew when it came out. He did not. I wonder if he swallowed it! Or maybe it is mixed up in the bed covers or on the floor somewhere!

Well, it's been like 2 weeks and I still haven't found it...and I still don't know! And so it goes....
December 28th was Kanoa's 6th birthday. He woke up and was so excited to have an Easter Egg hunt! That was what he wanted most of all. He didn't want cake. And he asked for Twix bars and Kit Kat's to be inside the eggs. Easter Egg hunts are THE best thing to him! So yes, we did that and he was so excited!!

It was like a combination of holidays when he sought out eggs in front of the Christmas tree...putting them into a Halloween pumpkin to make it easy to carry!
She made him a Five Night's At Freddy's stage with Bonnie the Bunny, Freddy the Bear and Chicka the Chicken. It came out so good!
And....Makana played "They say it's your birthday" on the ipad for me! And Li let me choose what to watch while we ate breakfast.

Today (if we make it there in time), we'll enjoy a free children's holiday movie in Belfast and then go to the juice bar, co-op and browse the shops in Belfast for fun.

-----
We saw The Boxtrolls in the old theater in Belfast, I got a juice (carrot, kale, parsley, and apple...the person who made the juice forgot the lemon, but I said it was fine just as it was...mmm mmmm...tasty! And felt SO good going down! Just what my body needed!) and Makana got a smoothie with almond butter, almond milk, bananas and blueberries and maybe more stuff in it (I forget what else), we had pizza for a snack (except for Li) and stopped at various little shops downtown to take a peek.

On the way home, we stopped for a visit at the Windsor Chairmakers. That was neat! I have always wanted to visit there, but so far had not! Next time I will check out the Shaker Shop which is next door (maybe part of it?) as well.

I thought it would be sentimental to video a little about Kanoa losing his first tooth and how he felt. However he wanted me to tell the story. But I wasn't there when it popped out and fell on the carpet and couldn't remember all the details he explained. So I asked him to tell his story of losing his first tooth. He told me, "It's not a story. It's real!" He didn't explain how it fell out on video, but I loved how cute he was saying "It's real!" (video will appear when uploaded)

Makana and Azure wanted to set up a lemonade stand yesterday, but it was so cold that they thought warm tea would sell better. They realized that there was not much traffic on our road, so asked if they could move to the stop sign two houses away. I said okay. After about fifteen minutes, I asked Li to watch Kanoa so I could go buy some tea from the girls and check on them. They weren't there. I was nervous about where they could be and go in the car to drive to look for them. They were on the next street going door to door with their tea, selling for fifty cents a cup at first, then increasing the price to 1.00 per cup. They were excited to make $3.20 each as some people gave a little extra. What teamwork!

I'm glad they had a great time, though I did tell them it is important to tell me before they go door to door next time! And if there is a next time I'd give Makana a cell phone and reminded them that although I do know most of our neighbors, it still is a good idea not to go in anyone's home in case they are invited or call me to ask me first, before doing so.

Various gyms to consider in the area:

Point Lookout - Was going to charge us $60/2 hours, but then changed their mind. They won't be renting out the gym space at this time.

Pitch - $5/pp or 50 for 1 1/2 hours or $35 for a 10 punch card

Thompson Center, Union, Maine (I didn't take photos...but she showed me a large room on the right side when you first come in.) Laurie was the contact person there.

Dave's World, Rt 220, Liberty, ME 589-4780 - $50/2 hours 50 x 100 space, has tables, chairs, floor space to run, floor is made of concrete, has bathrooms and heat.

Baptist Church, 29 Chestnut Street, Camden, ME (see pics below) 236-2195

Lincoln Street Center gym, Rockland (see pics below)

Belfast YMCA - Contact Karen: 338-4598, 1 hour $40 for 1/2 gym is the normal rate, but she will give us the whole gym for $60 or half the gym for $30 (If we do the half gym, if no one is there, we could use the whole gym. But if someone comes in, go back to half the gym while they shoot hoops or otherwise use the space.). Thursdays are not good. Friday's from 11:45 - 1:45 are good though. In the future, if we ever wanted to rent the "Community Room" it is 25/hour. The therapy pool is 75/hour. Stephanie is the aquatics person and we could check with her to see if it would be okay if anyone wanted to swim laps.

Pen Bay YMCA - Contact Paula Williamson at 236-3375 - Just found out that they WILL match the Point Lookout price! Great!! Now to figure four dates/times and send an email to see if we can still get 12 families for twenty dollars for those four dates (comes out to five dollars per family per date).
I really liked this post by Amber Stippy on the Radical Unschooling Facebook group. It was posted on October 18th. I wrote to her to ask if I could share it because it was such a great example of modeling and kindness!! It's a perfect example of why how we treat our kids and others is so important. Read on...feel the karma!

"Two weeks ago, I had to cancel a lunch date with my daughter. We're buying a house and the bank asked for a document. Then they asked for another and another. It took over an hour of searching, scanning, emailing, and feedback to get everything done. During this time my daughter slid me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She didn't say anything, didn't get any recognition, she just quietly put it on the desk and left. Later I come down and apologized for missing lunch and thanked her for the sandwich. Her reply was "I know what it's like to be very hungry and not be able to stop".

How does she know that? Because at 2, she was coloring so intensely that she didn't stop and I brought her cheerios. At 5 she was studying leaves and couldn't take a break and I brought her apples. Now at 8, she's so into Penguin Club that she doesn't take a break and I bring her that same peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

When I went into the kitchen, the peanut butter, jelly, and bread were all left out and open. She was in such a hurry to take care of me, everything else was second on her mind. According to the statement above, I should make her mindful of the food that was about to get stale. I didn't. I cleaned it up. Why? Because one day, I'll leave the bread out and her reaction will be "oh no, the bread is about the get stale, let me take care of that". And she will. This afternoon Li (age 13) was talking about how he likes games to be challenging.

He said, "If you knew everything in the world, life wouldn't be as fun because you wouldn't learn anything."

Guess he likes to learn and enjoys a challenge! I agree - it does keep things interesting!
This evening, I asked Makana (9 years old) if she could be ANYTHING in the world, what would she be.
She said "That's a hard question" She thought a few seconds and stated, "Happy." Then thoughtfully added, "Loved and appreciated. Appreciated. Because that makes me happy."
We went to Beth's Farm Market and bought a dried corncob. Instructions said to place it in a paper bag and nuke it for 2 minutes - 4 minutes. Man, that was cool!!! Yummmmm!!! I bit off the remaining popped corn right off the cob!

This morning Katie and I met Ruby, Roxanne and Larry Gauchman at the Bagel Cafe. We hadn't seen them in maybe three years and it was So nice to see them and talk to them! They were on their way back from Bar Harbor, so passing right through Camden. Both Ruby and Roxanne are doing what they love to do, one involved with dance and the other fashion design. One taking pre-college courses and the other a junior in college and starting an internship on Monday. Both were unschooled and still living spectacular lives. Katie left to go to work and the rest of us chatted more, especially about how some instructor's treat students and veganism. I loved talking about making and eating vegan foods as Ruby eats vegan like Li.

When I went home, Makana had made me a turkey sandwich! I "gobbled" that down (I only had tea at the Cafe as sometimes I feel an allergic response to their bagels sometimes) and we finished packing to go to the beach. I made Jim and Makana bagels with horseradish bacon cream cheese like they asked.

Li couldn't find any food he wanted to bring, so I offered for us to stop at Hannaford. We needed gas too, so Jim dropped us off and got gas while we picked up food. Kanoa asked me to get some things too - like Kit Kats or Twix and a free cookie and chicken nuggets! I told him I couldn't get the chicken nuggets, but I'd pick up some things for him there that he'd like. I bought Kanoa a long baguette, Kit Kats and a free cookie. Li chose a 2 coconut blueberry and 1 raspberry yogurts, organic lollipops and a bag of sea salted potato chips (he had already packed his favorite ketchup as he knew he wanted chips and Loves to eat them with ketchup). I chose a pint of Haagan Daz and a cocount raspberry yogurt (which was still cheaper than the cost of one ice cream out....I don't eat ice cream out because generally there is a chance of peanuts or other things I'm allergic to getting on the ice cream spoon and it is not worth it to me to take a chance - and I wanted something filling and heck, I don't normally eat this...so I felt like I would that day - and I so did enJoy it!).

Oh! When I was checking out at Hannaford, I overheard the checkout lady say to the current customer that her son said that she was going to be teaching people smarter than her. The customer said something and then the checkout lady said something to the effect that "you can't really teach people, you can only guide them." I smiled to myself (yes! Another person who gets that!) and commented to her about learning vs teaching when I was checking out! She and the former customer had gotten a kick out of the way the items were arranged by who wanted them.

Some of us snacked a bit while we drove to the beach. Michelle and Charles were walking up to the bathrooms as we got there! Charles showed us where they were sitting as the beach was crowded.

We had such a nice time!! Chatting, kids all playing in the water (which I heard was quite cold!) - this is the first summer ever that Kanoa is down by the water without us right next to him - though one or both of us always keep a good eye on him as he can't swim yet and he does go right up to his neck. It's nice to be able to sit on the beach (as long as we aren't too far away) and feel comfortable with him playing in the water. He is almost always with the other kids.

Kanoa asked me to come play with him in the water. I did! And it was So fun!!! It wasn't so cold after all (only when you got out until you dried off). We rode waves on the boogie board (one of the first times he's ever done this and it was so fun - waves small and perfect for him), and we jumped over them and splashed (he likes to play splash games...not my thing, but I do it because he likes it so much). Some of the others rode waves in with us too for a while. We'd say we were waiting for Mr. Biggie to come....and then when what we felt was a big enough wave, we'd try to ride it in. :)

We then found a bunch of hermit crabs and snails in periwinkle shells and dug out a little pool for them on the beach where the tide would find them when it came back in. Li thinks the creatures should be left in the sea, so he doesn't do this with us, but doesn't get upset over it either. Charles said he found "hermit crab city" and would pass the hermit crab shells to Makana who'd put them in her goggles that lay on the boogie board. They were a good team! Then I'd take the crabs from her and give them to Kanoa or walk them up to the pool myself. We found some Big ones! Cool!!

Michelle left to go pick up Jewel, start dinner and go to work. Charles was able to stay and keep playing. We'd drop him off on our way home later.

Jim and the older kids played baseball, making bases with Charle's horseshoes. What fun they had running all over the place!

While they were playing baseball, Kanoa and I explored the side of the beach with rocks and tide pools and tried to make a dam to stop the water that was running from the woods to the ocean. We climbed rocks noticing that sandy feet made a layer of protection on our soles, which helped them to feel better when we walked on the rocks. Kanoa said that aloud, but I had noticed it too - the sand did help, until it wore off. But then you could just step back in the sand again.

Kanoa also liked finding little baby crabs and climbing on higher rocks to see how far he could throw. He threw one rock and it broke when it hit the rocks on the ground. He also found a medium sized rock that he could break with his hands. I tried breaking it too as it was fun to be able to break it with our hands. It seemed like it was almost waterlogged (though no water came out of it and it wasn't wet) and kind of soft as it broke. Yet the rock was hard as you held it. Wonder what kind of rock that was? Was it rock for sure? Or something that resembled a rock and felt as hard as one?

Was trying to search for what kind of rock this could be got off of topic and bit and found this neat site:
http://tidepooltim.blogspot.com/ explored his blog a little (wish he wrote more!)
Pictures of hermit crabs up close: http://tidepooltim.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Running around playing baseball made everyone so sweaty and tired that back into the water the kids went! Jim said he was just about to tell them he needed to rest when they told him they couldn't play anymore as they were too tired! Charles, who had changed into shorts, went right in the ocean wearing them as the changing rooms were closed by this time. It was nearing 7pm! Jim got to chill in his chair for a bit and that is where he was when Kanoa and I got back from the rocky section of the beach. Two hours had zipped by! I couldn't believe it!

You could notice a change in the sky....getting dimmer. The kids had their boogie boards and were still having a blast in the water.

Kanoa, after being told to STOP throwing sand again (sigh...), became interested in the large hole the Charles had dug which was right in front of our spot. I brought him a sand pail and some sand molds that someone had left on the beach and after I made a few with him, he began to hide one of the molds and ask either Jim or I to pick which of two places under the sand it was. He tricked us so many times ;). (He so loves to trick people.)

The kids came out of the water and began playing in the hole too. Kanoa wasn't too keen on this, now thinking the hole was "his." He was there for a long while all by himself before they came. I explained that Charles had dug it originally and we could find or make another big hole for him if he wanted. He walked to a semi-dug out spot nearby for a bit, seeming to want to have a little space. I'm not sure if I said the right thing or not, but that is what I said and how I felt in the moment. Maybe the other kids would have given him a few more minutes alone if I had thought to ask, or even let him keep playing there alone. But I didn't think of that. I could have even dug them a new hole or dug a new one with them. But I felt like it was Charles' hole and in the moment I went with that. If Kanoa had dug the hole originally, he'd want to come to play in it later too and feel like it was still his, even if he played in the water for much of the day. So that is why I felt it was Charles' hole and he could certainly play in it and that if Kanoa didn't like that, I'd help Kanoa find another place to play. (wow...long thought process)

Charles got buried up to his shoulders and they all kept having fun. The beach had only a handful of people on it by this time.

At one point, Kanoa was running up toward the showers and I told Jim maybe this would be a good time to head out! I grabbed my chair and a towel and ran to catch up with Kanoa. We rinsed off, dropped off Charles, and headed home. What a great beach day!

I usually LOVE what is on the Mother List. It's one of my new favorite places to watch clips about tender moments in life, acts of kindness, etc. Well, this clip pissed me off. It was supposed to be about teaching natural consequences. However, it was punishment. I wrote a comment back just now. It's still awaiting moderation. I can post my thoughts here now though. So I will!

http://themotherlist.com/natural-consequences-powerful-teaching-device/
(I'd like to call the video: "Natural Consequences: A Horrible Teaching Device!"

or

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfUnI7CH5XY

What was described IS punishment, not natural consequences. And it is a mean and unsafe thing to do to your child. Or anyone! Imagine if that child falls down and gets hurt because the parent tried to teach their child a lesson by taking out the lightbulb. Ugh.... How about if a husband or wife thought their spouse left too many lights on? Would taking out the bulb be even something a person would think of? Of course not! People (of all ages) sometimes forget. So remind them. Talk to them about why it is important to you to do xyz. If they forget again, flip the switch off yourself. How big of a deal is that to do? They'll grow up....fast. Help them out for now and trust that they are doing their best. And in the meantime, model how you want them to be and do the things you would like them to do (you remember to turn off the lights for example).

Natural consequences are more like a child being cold because she forgot her jacket. If a person isn't able to borrow something to get warm, yes, that would be a natural consequence.

However, natural consequences don't have to be set up in order to happen and shouldn't be used to "teach a lesson." There will be plenty of lessons learned without trying.

If mom/dad was going along with a child who didn't bring a jacket, one of the parents could put one in the back of the car just in case. Why? Because mom/dad thinks ahead and feels it would be a nice thing to do in case their child gets cold. It is not a kind lesson to purposely let your kid suffer because you told them to bring a jacket and they forgot or truly believed they didn't need one. Some kids run warmer than others and really feel comfortable in cooler weather. Others are still figuring out when they need one and when they don't. Plus temperatures can change fast or the place you go to visit may be warmer or cooler than expected.

Forget trying to "teach your kid a lesson" (under the guise of natural consequences or any other trendy words). Be kind. Because kindness begets kindness. Now that is a lesson they can give back to others and it will be appreciated!
